55Seyid Shushinski

Seyid Shushinski (Mir Movsum Aga Seyid Ibrahim oglu’s stage name) was born in 1889 in Horadiz village of Shusha region and died here 1965. Khanende, musical personality, pedagogue, the Popular artist, the Honored teacher was one of the famous khanendes of Karabakh school of khanendes.

He played an important role in the development of Azerbaijani national music culture. Seyid Shushinski learnt the secrets of classical mugams and folk music from Mir Mohsun Navvab. In 1911-1919 years Seyid Shushinski worked in Tbilisi and improved khanende art.

In these years he performed in operas written by Azerbaijani composers. In 1913-1914 he was invited to Kiev by “Ekstrafon” stock-company to record his voice. Mugams as “Chahargah”, “Neva”, “Bayaty Isfahan”, “Humayun”, “Rast”, “Mahur”, “Zabul”, “Shahnaz”, “Mirza Huseyn Segahy”, zarbi mugams as “Mani”, “Arazbary”, “Mansuriyya” took original place in our music treasury.

Seyid Shushinski began to work first in the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire then in the Azerbaijan State Music School as a teacher in 1926 by Uzeyir Hajibeyov’s initiative. He was the teacher of several eminent khanendes (singers).
